Jersey Pearl first opened its doors to the public as the UK�s largest dedicated pearl showroom on the 5th of May 1985.
Jersey Pearl was created by Fred Scragg, his son Mike Scragg and son in law John Taylor; they�ve overseen the business for nearly 25 years keeping Jersey Pearl a true family company. Fred had seen that Jersey Pearl could take advantage of the island�s tax free status to let visitors learn about pearls, shop from a huge range of jewellery and buy something beautiful without having to pay VAT. His idea worked and many happy visitors have found that they can visit the showroom and take home a thorough understanding about pearls as well as some lovely jewellery.

Public demand for pearls continued despite the rapid decline of natural pearls being found, to fulfil this need three ingenious Japanese men developed a technique of culturing pearls from oysters and so by the 1920s we were able to sustainably quench our desire for pearls without further depleting the worlds natural oyster beds. Pearl culturing meant that, rather than destroying valuable natural ecosystems, they became actively preserved. Pearl farms require clean water and so the farmers make considerable efforts to look after them, creating areas of outstanding biodiversity and natural beauty.
